“Creating Your Future” ... a continuation of ninth grades college planning items—with an intentional focus:
- Continue cultivating self-awareness
- Craft a junior year competitive academic course schedule—incorporate IB, dual enrollment, honors, AP courses relevant to academic interests, school selectivity and availability
- Continue the development of your extracurricular activities list—discussions on how, why, and what to add depth
- PSAT—some schools allow you to take the October test. Discuss its value for scholarships and baseline for standardized tests
- Begin college exploration—attend a college fair, visit a college or two while on vacation
- Plan a summer experience(s)—relevant to interests and activities list depth
- Continue discussions—how to pay for college. Get more intentional
- Career exploration—shadowing, work experience, etc..
- Create a summer reading schedule—get specific for standardized testing and school selectivity
- Develop meaningful and relevant relationships with teachers, coaches, etc..
- Discuss the “holistic review process” —and the competitive landscape in college admissions

- Outline a senior year competitive academic course schedule—incorporate IB, dual enrollment, honors, AP courses relevant to academic interests, school selectivity and availability
- Update your extracurricular activities list
- Create/update your resume
- Create an ACT or SAT test prep plan—determine which test you “like” better based on baseline tests—determine test date schedule
- Identify your letter of recommendation writers (with intention)—continue cultivating those relationships
- Take the YouScience aptitude and interest assessment—apply findings to major and career options
- Create a summer reading schedule—get specific for standardized testing and school selectivity

“Strategic Senior” ... a continuation of 11th grades college planning items—with an intentional focus:
- Confirm final college list
- Complete final college visits
- Prepare for campus interviews (if applicable)
- Test scores—retake discussion and timelines, and send to applicable schools. Determine which colleges require self-report scores
- Use the various application platforms—guide the entire admissions process
- Personal Statement and Supplemental Essays for each college—brainstorm, write, and edit (up to 11 colleges)
- Determine whether to apply EA, ED, or RD—discuss the differences and advise accordingly
- Discuss and anticipate—waitlists, deferrals (create an action plan if appropriate)
- Apply for financial aid using the FAFSA and CSS profile (many schools require this, even if you are full-pay)
- Continue scholarship applications
- Assist with admission decisions
Time Spent in Consultation May Include:
- Explore reasons to transfer (goals, career, major, personal)
- A determination of the missing 'pieces' necessary to ensure a successful 'new' college experience
- Review of academic credits earned
- Create a list of questions transfer admissions counselors
- Develop a spreadsheet that consists of application deadlines, requirements, transferable credits, tests scores required, transcripts, and majors
